Wisdom?

john's definition of wisdom is: knowing what NOT to do next time. It is probably best to put this definition in the positive: "knowing what to do next time". Sometimes, however, events are not just black or white, but shades of grey. That is why there is a steering wheel on cars, or a thermostat in the house. Therefore, the better definition is: knowing what is probably the best thing to do next time.

This page contains some of john's thoughts which MIGHT help those younger than john. john has spent a lot of effort NOT presenting his personal views though out this website, but some will likely show through here. If you do not agree with these views, john apologizes in advance. john isn't sure that all of his thoughts actually contain much wisdom, but john hopes that a few of these might be worthily of being called that. Here goes:

  • The Three Stages of Marriage

Sex - approximately 7 years. Many couples cannot transition into companionship and just divorce at this point. The book "Blink" talks about whether a couple can sucessfully transition this period or not.

Companionship - many fine years hopefully. Sex continues, but is not the dominate force it used to be. Over the years, sex slows down and companionship increases.

Caretaker - at the end of life. Since men generally die first the caretaker role usually falls to the wife. If the man takes a long time to die (john knows of a man that took a year and a half), the wife often becomes a basket case. It takes her long time to recover. Some women never recover.

  • Is there a better way of computing?

In life (DNA), nature programs with four bits (G, A, T, C) rather than just the two bits we currently use (0,1) for computers. Nature has had millions of years to "get it right". Why has nature chosen 4 bits instead of two?

January 24, 2013 - Finally what john has been suggesting for the last several years has happened! In today's USAToday, on page 2B, there is an article entitled: "The newest storage device for data? DNA".

The article talks about two teams , one British, one at Harvard, using DNA to store data. The DNA was created artifically. One of the teams recorded a portion of Shakespeare's sonnet, "Thou art more lovely and more temperate". In DNA, it begins: TAGAT, GTGTA, CAGAC.

The two teams used commercially available sequencing machines to generate the amino acid components of the DNA sequence. To prevent errors," every stretch of DNA is repeated four times, twice backward, in overlapping strands that the computer can put back together and read accurately".

The teams expect this sequence to last thousands of years.

Now, the question is: where do you store such information? Perhaps the answer might be within our own DNA sequence. The next question is: what if such information is stored there already by past generations. john thinks that much of the current genome sequence still has an unknown purpose. Perhaps some of it isn't for making people, but is an existing record of human history, such as which planets before earth humans have inhabited. Instead of sending robots to distant planets in search of life, maybe we just need to look within to find where life on other planets has been. To greatly borrow and distort a phase: "I have met the aliens, and they are us! At a bare minimum, this would make a great work of fiction someone should write.

  • Maslow's Needs Hierarchy

It will be best if Wikapedia tells you about this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow's_hierarchy_of_needs. Basically, Maslow lists five stages of needs. This is a very valuable concept. Please take the time to understand it!

  • How to make money ... maybe

"Things are never as good or as bad as they appear." This saying came from someone worth $30 million dollars before he married someone else with $30 million more. john thinks things must have looked pretty good to him, yet he was a very wise man according to john. He ended up selling quartz bars to the Japanese when the Civilian Band (CB) market suddenly went belly up. He had been selling quartz crystals to them before that, but had in his contract that they had to purchase either finished crystals or the equivalent quartz bars to complete their order.

Many people end up selling stocks low and buying them high. john talked to "Ken" who never worked a day in his life. He was able to support himself nicely by buying and selling stocks. john asked him what he does with stocks that drop in value. His answer was that he simply hangs onto them until they go back up, and then he sells them. Apparently he had enough time and money to do that!

Never invest money you cannot afford to lose.

Diversify stocks. There may be exceptions to this rule, but not many.

Put money away before you see it with an automatic withdrawal plan from your paycheck. Invest the maximum in a 401K, if you have one. If you wait to put money away based on what is left, you will never put money away.

Do not buy what you cannot afford! Remember the Buddhist thought that desire causes suffering. Limit your desires and you limit your suffering. It is alright to have preferences, but do not let them rule you.

Right now, john thinks that you cannot pump trillions of dollars into the economy without ending up with inflation. john is buying major purchases now, as he expects them to be much higher later on.

Now you can guess just as well as john can. john isn't sure that the stock market is much different from just plain gambling; however, Warren Buffett might disagree.

NEVER. Let john repeat this: NEVER loan money to anyone, espeically relatives (or anyone else for that matter). Shakespeare was right: "Never a lender or borrower be, for both loses a friend." NEVER.

From 100 subtract your age. This is the amount you should be risking money (stock market, etc.).

  • Alien Communications:

Here is john's quess as to why SETI hasn't gotten any signals from other civilizations elsewhere in the universe. SETI may be trying to communicate using the wrong kind of media. There may be another type of media which is instantaneous rather than traveling at the speed of light. Work in quantum mechanics seems to suggest this might be possible. If true, other civilizations may be waiting to communicate with us, but only after we discover this new form of communication. Of course, with any form of communication, we must learn the protocol being used or we would just be blasting messages like we were the most important creatures around. We may want to listen before "shooting our mouths off" for several reasons.
